Inside Dumbo House, Brooklyns New Castle of Cool

dumbo house

This riverfront corner of Brooklyn was home to a ferry landing and a collection of manufacturing warehouses and factories. In one of those factories in 1890, a Scottish immigrant named Robert Gair invented the pre-cut cardboard box. As a result, the neighborhood was known as “Gairville” for years. DUMBO, short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is a historic waterfront neighborhood in Brooklyn that has been transformed into a chic and vibrant community. It is known for its stunning views of the Manhattan skyline, cobblestone streets, and trendy boutiques and restaurants.

Critics at the time weren’t always impressed with Walt Disney’s bid to turn animation into a fine art. Rushed into production largely because the studio needed an influx of cash, “Dumbo” is credited as a key player in saving Disney’s fortunes. But if all had gone according to the studio’s initial plan, 1942’s “Bambi” would likely have preceded “Dumbo” to the big screen. However, that film’s animals, equally realistic and fantastical, as well as its harrowing forest fire scene, were, to say the least, a challenge to both conceptualize and animate.

DUMBO House’s interiors were decorated to echo the artist studios that have been in the area since the 1960s and 1970s. If you do get inside, remember, there’s no Instagramming your beautiful drink, no calling your friends to tell them who you saw in a cabana. Instead you can–or at least should–talk to your fellow creative humans. But the space itself sets it apart from the WeWorks of the world. The same kind of people you might find hunched over laptops in a coffee shop are instead hunched over laptops next to striking purple glassware, soaking up the sun from floor-to-ceiling windows.

“DUMBO has become an international destination,” say Eklund and Novo. “It offers expansive homes, stunning views, and state-of-the-art amenities,” say Fredrik Eklund and M. Monica Novo, licensed brokers with The Eklund Gomes team and Douglas Elliman, respectively. The “Manhattan Bridge Blue” walls are the exact color of the Manhattan Bridge (which is seen through the windows). On the walls, there are works from artists David Adjaye, Zoe Buckman, and Steven Siegel. The official launch was earlier this month, but Dumbo House kicked off a bit earlier with a group of founding members meant to spread the word. With 20 clubs around the world, and eight in North America, including two in Manhattan in the Meatpacking District and the Lower East Side, the move to Brooklyn wasn’t entirely unexpected.

In the game, the Disney Villains alter the happy endings from Jiminy Cricket's book; in particular, the Ringmaster forces Dumbo to endlessly perform humiliating stunts in his circus. In the end, the Ringmaster is defeated when he is knocked unconscious by a well-aimed custard pie. During the clowns' fire act, Dumbo jumps off the platform and prepares to fly. He drops the feather, but Timothy assures him it was only a psychological aid.

The entire neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, and many of the buildings are former factories. Everyone’s typing or talking or, presumably, making something. Dumbo's Circus is a live-action/puppet television series for preschool audiences that aired on The Disney Channel in the 1980s. Each character would perform a special act, which ranged from dancing and singing to telling knock knock jokes. Frank Churchill and Oliver Wallace scored the film while Ned Washington wrote the lyrics to the songs. For their work on the score, Churchill and Wallace won the Academy Award for Best Original Score.

Eventually, the factories closed and by the 1970s the district had become a hub for artists, who used the large spaces for studios. It was this creative crowd that coined the name “DUMBO.” However, the moniker  wasn’t popularized until the late 1990s. It was during that period that developer David Walentas purchased many buildings in the area. He renovated some into offices, and others into glitzy condominiums. Additionally, a host of tech companies such as Etsy and smaller incubators are headquartered there. Prospective members can apply anytime through the online application, answering two questions about your work history and what you hope to bring to the community.

And this is where those who are suckers for a good view—or suckers for a good view and roof-deck pools—will be. The calendar is filled with member events with the overarching idea to learn something and, possibly, meet someone. Art talks are held in the library and yoga sessions up on the roof. That’s right, the network of members’ clubs known as Soho House has opened up a new outpost in the heart of Dumbo. The entrance is a discreet elevator with a bronze door in the lobby of Empire Stores.

A belated stork catches up with the moving train and drops off the expected baby elephant, Jumbo Junior. The other elephants are initially delighted, until they see the baby has far-oversized ears, and promptly nickname him "Dumbo". Mrs. Jumbo shows her baby great care and love, defending him from teasing by other elephants.

Produced to recoup the financial losses of both Pinocchio and Fantasia, Dumbo was a deliberate pursuit of simplicity and economy for the Disney studios. At 64 minutes, it is one of the studio's shortest animated features. One voice was synthesized using the Sonovox system, but it too was recorded using the RCA System. The main character is Jumbo Jr., an elephant who is cruelly nicknamed "Dumbo", as in "dumb".

“It’s a small neighborhood,” says Schwartzberg, who lives in nearby Brooklyn Heights. There’s really almost no co-op inventory in DUMBO, which drives condo prices up even more.” And not everything is in a converted factory. Schwartzberg cites a clutch of new, “snazzy” developments, including the rentals at 60 Water Street and the condos of One John Street. The 33-story, curving high-rise will be the tallest building in DUMBO, with 76 condos. “It’s such a great area — you can see why so many people have moved here,” says Soho House founder and chief executive officer Nick Jones, glancing out of one of the soaring windows inside DUMBO House. The venue would open its doors to the CFDA the next evening, kicking off the membership club’s latest addition to the network — its first Brooklyn house.

Being clumsy due to his ears, Dumbo is made into a sideshow attraction. When some rowdy boys started to bully Dumbo and his ears, Mrs. Jumbo spanks their leader and throws hay bales at them. Mrs. Jumbo flies into a rage, eventually dousing the ringmaster in a water tub. Dumbo is blamed for the incident, and then gets shunned by the other elephants.

Churchill and Washington's work on "Baby Mine" also garnered a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Timothy decides to take Dumbo to see Mrs. Jumbo, but they cannot see each other's faces and can only intertwine trunks. Meanwhile, the clowns decide to increase the popularity of their fireman act by dangerously raising the platform Dumbo jumps from. In celebration of the plan, they drink champagne, and a bottle of it falls into a water vat. Crying after visiting his mother, Dumbo has the hiccups, so Timothy takes him to the vat for some water.

I would give you names but that’d go against their privacy policy. Photos aren’t allowed anywhere in the house either (though that hasn’t stopped some guests from subtly Instagramming from the roof, leaving off the identifiable geotag). The defunct train tracks criss-crossing central Dumbo once played home to freight carriers transporting manufactured goods from coffee to Brillo pads down the borough’s factory-packed coastline.

The crows wave goodbye to the elephants as they travel away. In the years following its initial release, Dumbo remains popular ever since. Its derivative works include a popular theme park attraction, merchandise products, a television series, and a live-action adaptation. It can — and has — been argued that its financial limitations led to some inventive animation, namely in the trippy pink-elephant sequence, which inspired a whole breadth of ’60s-era psychedelics.

A Waterfront Wonderland: Brooklyn Bridge Park

Dumbo and Timothy are later discovered asleep high up in a tree by Dandy Crow and his gang. Initially making fun of Timothy's assertion that Dumbo flew with his ears while drunk, the crows are soon moved by Dumbo's sad story. They decide to help Timothy, giving him a "magic feather" to help Dumbo fly. Holding the feather, Dumbo does indeed take off a second time. He and Timothy return to the circus with plans to surprise the audience.

What to Know About Living in Sunset Park, Brooklyn

He is ridiculed for his oversized ears, but in fact he is capable of flying by using his ears as wings. Throughout most of the film, his only true friend, aside from his mother, is a mouse named Timothy – a relationship parodying the stereotypical animosity between mice and elephants. For most of New York City’s history, DUMBO was considered part of nearby Vinegar Hill.

“It’s such a great area — you can see why so many people have moved here,” says Soho House founder and chief executive officer Nick Jones, glancing out of one of the soaring windows inside DUMBO House. The Houses bill themselves as a club for creative community. Members include photographers, writers, media, journalists, filmmakers.

Brooklyn Half Marathon: route, road closures, what to know

Often, humans are seen simply as shadows in a tent, which while deviating from the precision of earlier Disney movies, heightens “Dumbo’s” themes of isolation and careless bullying. It was not 1940’s “Pinocchio,” regarded today as a groundbreaking work in effects animation and arguably still one of Disney’s more intrinsically detailed, emotionally expansive films. Inside a former tobacco warehouse, this waterfront theater hosts concerts and award-winning theater productions. With so much packed into just 35 acres, DUMBO punches above its weight. “It truly is the It-neighborhood of greater New York,” say Eklund and Novo.

Dumbo successfully flies about the big top, much to the delight of the public. He throws a trunkful of peanuts to the other elephants as payback. Dumbo gains fame and fortune, Timothy becomes his new manager and signs him to a Hollywood contract, and Mrs. Jumbo is freed.

After scaring off the other elephants, Timothy, a mouse that travels with the circus, befriends Dumbo and decides to make him a star. He whispers in the ringmaster's ear while the latter sleeps, convincing him to try a new stunt with Dumbo as the top of a pyramid of elephants. Dumbo trips on his ears during the show and knocks over the pyramid, injuring the other elephants and causing the big top to crash down. He is put in with the clowns' firemen act, regularly jumping from a "burning building" prop into a vat of pie filling. Despite his newfound popularity, he hates the job and becomes depressed. If Disney were to survive — at least as Walt had envisioned it — it needed a hit, one that would be relatively cheap and quick to produce.

When I was there on a recent morning, it felt more like a co-working space–laptops and coffee cups everywhere. More than 20,000 runners are set to hit the streets of Brooklyn on Sunday, April 28 for the NYCRUNS Brooklyn Half Marathon. Dumbo had its television premiere on September 14, 1955,[25] albeit severely edited, as an installment of the Disneyland television show. The film was shown unaltered on September 17, 1978, as part of a two-night salute to the program's 25th anniversary. By car, the ride from DUMBO across either bridge and up to Midtown can take as little as 15 minutes, although with traffic that can balloon to 45 minutes. For a more scenic commute, the NYC Ferry is one of the neighborhood’s best assets.

As for taking in the views, the intersection of Water and Washington streets is where to go for the most Instagrammable photo opp. Photographers (professional and amateur) flock here for an iconic look at the sky-blue Manhattan Bridge set between the red brick warehouse buildings. Getting from DUMBO into Manhattan is a cinch, with easy road, subway, and ferry access. It takes around 15 minutes to get to 42nd Street from the neighborhood’s two closest subway stations, York Street (just east of the Manhattan Bridge) and High Street (just south of the Brooklyn Bridge).

Culturally, Disney’s current films were perceived by the critical elite as lacking the warmth and whimsy of its “Silly Symphony” and Mickey Mouse shorts. “Cold” is a word that appears in many descriptions of “Pinocchio” and “Fantasia,” films that are probably more adored today and are perceived as concluding Disney’s first major golden age. Schwartzberg also notes the shopping and dining options in the area. Here, outposts of legendary New York food institutions like Ess-A-Bagel and Jacob’s Pickles bring the flavors of the city all under one roof (and to a river-facing outdoor terrace). You look at Manhattan — which is so beautiful to look at — and those two bridges are two of the most well-known bridges in the world,” Jones says.

Dumbo House assimilates nicely into the Brooklyn ecosystem. Everything in the room was carefully curated and designed especially for this location; the menus feature illustrations by a local Dumbo artist. The interior is painted the exact shade of blue of the Manhattan Bridge just off in the distance. And the art collection–every house has one–is curated under an architecture theme, with some of the abstract drawings created by local Brooklyn artists. In Florida, while a large circus spends the off-season in its winter grounds, a flock of white storks delivers many babies to the animals. One elephant, Mrs. Jumbo, does not receive her baby, and keeps scanning the sky.

The Soho House team drops in a year in advance to survey a city’s creative community and build a network of people who might be interested in joining. The route for the Brooklyn Half Marathon will start in North Brooklyn and go under the Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn bridges, including passing through Dumbo and downtown Brooklyn. The race will then head down Flatbush Avenue, down Eastern Parkway, and conclude in Prospect Park. Secret Service responds after White House fence is breached by toddler

white house fence toddler

Reporting in this current political climate is a responsibility we do not take lightly, and we thank you for your support. In the most alarming incident, in early 2017, a man carrying chemical spray scaled a 5ft fence by the US treasury department next door, then spent 16 minutes on White House grounds before being apprehended. The Secret Service sprang into action after a tiny intruder crawled through the White House fence. In 2017, authorities found 38-year-old Marci Wahl hanging from her shoelaces inside the fence on the south side of the White House. Prior to the fence’s replacement, attempts — some successful — to vault the barrier had been relatively common. The National Park Service constructed a new fence in front of the White House in 2022, replacing the two-metre-tall (6.6-foot) fence with a nearly four-metre (13-foot) one.

The White House grounds are safe after a toddler breached the fence

The breach happened on the north side of the highly secured property, while President Biden was inside the executive mansion, according to his public schedule. While the construction of the northern, southern and eastern sections of the White House fence have been completed, construction on the west section of the fence is expected to be finished this year. Notably, this comes after the Secret Service and National Park Service have worked since 2019 to double the height of the fence to around 13 feet after previous security breaches. A toddler briefly entered the White House grounds on Tuesday, squeezing through the metal fencing on the executive mansion's north side. Our journalists will continue to cover the twists and turns during this historic presidential election. With your help, we'll bring you hard-hitting investigations, well-researched analysis and timely takes you can't find elsewhere.

The event prompted the Secret Service to launch an investigation into security practices at the presidential home. The area in front of the north fence, which is near Lafayette Square, is a popular destination for tourists. WASHINGTON — Security systems at the White House instantly triggered the deployment of Secret Service officers Tuesday after a breach — by a toddler.

The fear of being tackled by secret service officers or worse usually keeps people from breaching the roughly 13-foot fence that surrounds the White House. While taller, the new fence has an additional inch of space between its pickets, for a total of 5½ inches between posts. It may be the first successful intrusion onto the complex since the White House fence was doubled in height to roughly 13 feet in recent years after a series of security breaches. The intruder, Jonathan Tran, was found to be carrying two cans of Mace, a passport, a computer and a book by the then president, Donald Trump. That same year, a man with a knife jumped the fence and made it all the way into the East Room of the White House before being stopped.

Uniformed officers, responsible for security at the White House, walked across the North Lawn to retrieve the tot, officials said. Older children have at times become stuck in the barrier, which has also been the scene of demonstrations, with protesters chaining themselves to the fence. While taller, the new fence has an additional inch of space between pickets, for a total of 14cm (5.5 inches) between posts — just enough clearance for a pint-sized interloper to slip through. Pint-sized intruder picked up by Secret Service after squeezing through White House fence

Although the new fences are taller, they feature an additional inch between posts — giving the tiny trespasser 5½ inches of space to work with. Tiny intruders were reported in April 2015 and in August of 2014 and older children have sometimes become stuck there. This may have been the first successful intrusion of the White House grounds since the fence was heightened, but this is not the first time a toddler has made their way into the complex. The National Park Service said “the new fence incorporates anti-climb and intrusion detection technology and is designed to mitigate current and future security threats”. A toddler has caused a stir — and become one of the tiniest intruders ever — after squeezing through the metal fence outside of the White House in Washington, DC.

The child is thought to be about 3 years old, secret service agents told a USA TODAY White House correspondent on scene. Access to the public area of the complex was briefly restricted as the officers worked to return the toddler to his parents on Pennsylvania Avenue. The toddler slipped through the fence on Tuesday morning, prompting officers from the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division to walk across the executive mansion’s North Lawn to intercept the youngster. The toddler is believed to be the first successful intruder across the White House fence, which was installed in 2022. In 2014, for example, a 43-year-old man scaled one of the fences, armed with a folding knife, and made it all the way into the White House's East Room. The unidentified tot may have been the first person to get through the White House’s new 13-foot tall fences, which were installed in recent years after several breaches.

Access to the complex was briefly restricted while officers conducted the reunification. "The White House security systems instantly triggered Secret Service officers and the toddler and parents were quickly reunited." It may be the first successful intrusion onto the complex since the White House fence was doubled in height to roughly 13 feet (3.96-meters) in recent years after a series of security breaches. The Secret Service rushed to intercept a pint-sized intruder at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Tuesday after a toddler squeezed through the White House fence. This is not the first time a child has slipped through the fence, according to Fox News. Access to the outside perimeter of the White House available to the public was momentarily regulated as officers reunited the toddler with his parents on Pennsylvania Ave and asked them a few questions, the AP reported. Toddler Squeezes Through White House Fence, Secret Service Respond

In 2019, the Secret Service began construction on a 13-foot, 1-inch high fence, more than double the size of the previous 6-foot fence. The higher fence, which has wider and stronger pickets, was meant to keep intruders out, especially after a few high-profile incidents of intruders and fence-jumpers getting onto White House grounds. Secret Service officers before the child and the parents were reunited, the Secret Service said.

Older children have sometimes become stuck in the iconic barrier, which has also been the scene of demonstrations, with protesters chaining themselves to the fence.

Littlest Intruder: Toddler Crawls Through White House Fence

U.S. Secret Service uniformed division police officers carry a young child who crawled through the White House fence on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington on Tuesday. A tiny toddler squeezed through the fence of the White House on Tuesday, prompting Secret Service to respond to the intrusion.

Secret Service officers respond to a White House breach — by a toddler

Reporting the breach, NPR said “older children have sometimes become stuck in the iconic barrier, which has also been the scene of demonstrations, with protesters chaining themselves to the fence”. The Secret Service chief of communications, Anthony Guglielmi, said the “curious young visitor” gained entry “along the … north fence line [and] briefly entered White House grounds. In recent years, security concerns have caused the Secret Service to double the height of the fence around the White House, with AP noting the barrier now stands 13 feet tall. However, this taller fence also has an additional inch of space between its pickets, which may have allowed the toddler the room to squeeze through.

WASHINGTON — Security systems at the White House instantly triggered the deployment of Secret Service officers Tuesday after a breach — by a toddler.

In more exacting footwear circles, sneakers with vintage DNA are having a moment.

I was intrigued to try them in person and am happy to report that they are just as stunning IRL. The extra-tall stiletto heels mean that they're not comfortable enough to stand in for a long night, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they are easier to walk in than they might appear. Mold and Health

mold in house

While mold is not the only reason for wallpaper separating from the wall, if the area also feels damp then mold is the likely culprit. It may be worth peeling back the wallpaper or scraping away paint in one of the affected areas to check for visible mold growth on the surface of the wall. It isn’t advisable to paint over mold, as the growth is likely to continue to reappear over time. Mold spores that are naturally present in the environment can spring to life when they encounter damp conditions in a home. The excess moisture provides mold spores with the water they need to germinate and flourish.

What are the symptoms of mold exposure?

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) is offering Civil Money Penalty (CMP) funding to nursing homes to protect indoor air quality in visit... Resolve any issues causing mold growth, and throw away anything affected by mold or contributing to mold growth that you can’t clean. It’s best to hire a professional to help you identify and remove mold, especially if you’re allergic or vulnerable to it. Keeping clear of mold is the best way to prevent it from triggering your asthma or allergies.

Helping You Maintain Quality Air with Less Mold, Dust, and Allergens

For extreme cases, you can leave the item to soak in hot water mixed with a cup of bleach for a couple of hours prior to machine-washing. Do not use bleach to remove mold from wood — it will struggle to penetrate the surface, so it won't clean effectively. During a blood test, your healthcare provider will use a thin needle (slightly smaller than the size of a standard earring post) to withdraw a small amount of blood from a vein in your arm. The lab test measures the amount of IgE in your blood that binds to black mold. Black mold needs warm temperatures and moisture to grow and spread. It commonly appears in damp or water-damaged areas of your home, such as basements, showers and windows.

However, people with certain health conditions may be at risk of a lung infection or other infections from inhaling certain types of mold. Avoiding mold can be hard since it exists outside and inside all year round. Taking steps to reduce mold in and around your house can help you avoid a mold rash if you are allergic. Preventing a mold rash can be challenging since mold is virtually everywhere and its microscopic spores can be impossible to see. Mold: Symptoms of Exposure, Risks, and More

Mold in the home happens when mold spores enter the house, either through open areas or when something carries them inside. It is OK to have some mold indoors, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. However, mold in the home can negatively affect a person’s health if it lands on damp or wet areas, as this is the ideal environment for growth. Molds produce spores, which spread by floating around in the air. There is no way to completely prevent spores, and they can persist in conditions where mold itself cannot grow.

What causes black mold?

External mold can do significant damage to exterior surfaces over time, eating away at wood, stucco and other materials. In addition, exterior mold can easily work its way into the house if left unchecked. If you suspect you have a black mold allergy, reach out to your healthcare provider or an allergist for a diagnosis.

If you have black mold allergies, your body responds to your first encounter with black mold spores by creating immunoglobulin E (IgE). Your body makes different types of IgE, which target specific kinds of allergens, including black mold. IgE antibodies bind to mast cells (histamine-containing cells) in your mucus membranes, skin, gastrointestinal (GI) tract and airways.

Molds are usually not a problem indoors, unless mold spores land on a wet or damp spot and begin growing. Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions) and irritants. Inhaling or touching mold or mold spores may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Any mold should be removed and the moisture source that helped it grow should be removed. Certain molds are toxigenic, meaning they can produce toxins (specifically “mycotoxins”). Hazards presented by molds that may produce mycotoxins should be considered the same as other common molds which can grow in your house. Not all fungi produce mycotoxins and even those that do will not do so under all surface or environmental conditions. Once mold starts to grow in carpet, insulation, ceiling tiles, drywall, or wallboard, the only way to deal with the problem is by removal and replacement. Mold is not welcome in a home, as it breeds other problems and damages your interiors.

Getting rid of mold may take a few forms, from scrubbing with detergent and water (then drying the surface thoroughly) to the use of specialized mold removal products. While tempting, it’s almost never a good idea to simply paint over a patch of moldy wall. The paint will not remove the mold, and your problem will almost certainly return. It’s usually not difficult to identify mold, from its signature musty odor to its discoloring effect on surfaces. But it’s not only about the mold-stained section of drywall in your hallway, although that may be a prominent example.

Wash or wipe porous surfaces and check regularly to see if mold has returned, as it can infiltrate these materials. If mold continues to reappear, consider disposing of these items. People with a mold allergy as well as asthma have a higher chance of having an asthma attack when there is mold in the environment.

People with asthma, allergies, or immune system conditions may have immune reactions to mold, regardless of its color. Regardless of color, all molds should be removed from buildings and homes. Furthermore, no evidence links black molds, including Stachybotrys chartarum, to particular health conditions.

If mold has made an appearance on your favorite piece of furniture, don’t throw it away just yet. First, using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner, vacuum any loose spores from the surface. If this hasn’t done the trick, you can also dilute baking soda and water, before letting it sit for a few minutes before rinsing and drying.

Histamine opens blood vessels, constricts airways, and creates mucus to protect your body from the allergen. These inflammatory responses result in allergy symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and/or a mold rash. Allergic reactions to mold can be immediate or delayed, so it can be hard to identify mold as the source of a new rash or skin itching.

Mold growth doesn’t just impact the human inhabitants of a home. Pets often have heightened senses compared to humans and might detect and react to mold even before their owners notice anything amiss. They may begin to avoid specific areas of the house that they once frequented if they detect the presence of mold there. Physical symptoms that have no other apparent cause could also be a result of mold. If you spot mold on walls or ceilings made of sheetrock or plaster, you can make them disappear without replacing any materials. But if mold appears on a very porous surface, such as a ceiling tile, it's best to replace it right away.

If left untreated, these small black spots can spread and do some serious damage to your home, not to mention your health. Owner Mary Ellen Baker angrily told Seminole commissioners at the April 9 county meeting that she doesn’t see how the county can simply tear down a house. The health effects of mold can be different for different people so you cannot rely on sampling and culturing to know if you or a member of your family might become sick. No matter what type of mold is present, you need to remove it. Also, good sampling for mold can be expensive, and there are no set standards for what is and what is not an acceptable quantity of different kinds of mold in a home.
